The Wayzata U12 Girls C1 Wild Things, coached by CJ Peszneker and Hugh Voight, won their second tournament in 3 weeks this weekend (6/12-6/14/09) at the All American cup in Blaine. Friday night Wayzata played to a 0-0 tie against MTW. On Saturday the Wild Things secured a place in the semis with 2 victories over MTA White 2-1 and the St. Paul Black Hawks 3-0. By Sunday morning’s semi final game the injury and illness plagued Wild Things were down to only 10 remaining players. The girls played their hearts out against a tough JUSC (Des Moines, IA) and were able to come away with a 1-0 victory on a breakaway goal by Mikayla Nelson. That put them in the championship against the team they had tied Friday night, MTW. Wayzata went up early with a first half goal by Anna French only to have their lead lost when MTW scored on a free kick. The Wild Things took the lead again in the second half on a goal by Mikayla Nelson only to lose it again when MTW scored on a penalty kick. Though Wayzata had multiple chances to put the game away in regulation and the 2 overtime periods, hitting the post 3 times, they were unable to get the ball in the net one last time. Wild things goalie, Rachael King, was solid as the game went into penalty kicks allowing only 2 goals out of the 5 MTW shots. Wayzata was able to put away 3 of their 5 shots with goals by Amanda Urke, Kaylyn Billmeyer and Audrey Clarno thus securing another tournament championship.
